About the day


This session will look at some of the key skills and advice needed to present merchandise effectively in a museum or heritage shop. The day will include advice and discussion on:



  • Visual      merchandising and display; unraveling the jargon

  • Key      principles for effective visual merchandising

  • Some key      principles for creative display

  • Effective      ticketing and pricing of merchandise


The advice will be illustrated by a fascinating range of slides of techniques used in cultural shops.


Who should attend?


The session is aimed at anyone responsible for running the shop and/ or presenting the merchandise in a small or medium size museum and especially those who may not have had much, or any, formal training in visual merchandising in the past.

 Peter Holloway, Retail Thinking


Peter has extensive experience of working with a broad range of clients in the heritage and cultural sectors and advising on many retail issues. He trained in the John Lewis Partnership, where he held management positions in several stores and worked in a variety of product fields. He was a buyer and Assistant to the General Manager in an independent department store before joining National Trust Enterprises where he was responsible for the management and profitability of all the Trust’s shops in Wales.


Peter established the Retail Thinking consultancy in 2002 and clients have included Bristol Museums, Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum, Dorchester, Westminster Abbey, Leeds Castle, Edinburgh City Museums & Galleries, The Florence Nightingale Museum and Biggin Hill Memorial Museum.
